A career transition is the process of identifying and pursuing a new career. A career transition, often known as a career shift or change, is the act of seeking employment in a different field than your current one.

There are 4 types of career transitions,

Same Industry, Same Role

The first form of career transition is the easiest to implement. This appears to be acquiring a new job at a new firm that is in your industry and the roles you are performing are the same. This is sometimes referred to as a lateral move, and the job title will likely be the same or similar.

New Industry, Same Role⁠

The second career transition is transferring functional abilities to a new industry and beginning with the same or equivalent job title. This can be advantageous because it enables you to position yourself as a candidate with the relevant abilities and credentials. It's critical to comprehend the new industry culture.

Changing roles can be difficult because of gaps in skills, knowledge, and certifications. To effectively promote yourself for the new position, highlight your transferable skills and explain how your previous experiences will assist you succeed. Consider enrolling in training or taking on new initiatives inside your existing organization to obtain the essential abilities.

Before the Transition

Identify your transferable abilities. 

Investigate your chosen industry and identify which of your current skills and strengths apply. These usually involve soft abilities like teamwork, communication, decision-making, and multitasking. 

Determine what skills you need. 

Identify and build the hard skills required for your new career. You can try to gain skills on your own or enroll in online or trade school courses. Then, include these talents on your CV to increase your chances of getting a job in your new field. 

Learn the industry.

Before you interview for a job, familiarize yourself with the industry and its lingo. To learn about the language, equipment, and job responsibilities, consults job descriptions, industry publications, and websites. Include frequent terminology and keywords on your resume to demonstrate to hiring managers that you are knowledgeable in the subject.

Consider life's changes.

Determine which aspects of your personal life may alter as you prepare for your new work. If you have a family, you may require additional child care or relocation. Your professional change may also need time away from hobbies and relationships.

During the transition

Quit your current job

Whatever your reason for leaving, you must quit professionally and on good terms. Give your manager enough notice (at least two weeks) and compose a professional resignation letter outlining your decision. Finish any existing tasks and document your job assignments and workflows to ensure a smooth transition.

Major career transitions may include obtaining a new certification, license, or degree. Determine whatever certifications you require, as well as the time and money required obtaining them.

Update your resume.

As your industry knowledge, abilities, and qualifications grow, include them on your resume. Highlight your existing talents and expertise in a variety of ways so that they are relevant to your new field. Create an objective statement that describes your career ambitions and what you can contribute to the industry. Also, recognize what previous experience to remove from your resume if it is no longer useful to you.

Apply to entry-level opportunities.

Be patient.

Prepare to spend years studying about your new industry and gaining experience before achieving your objectives. Career progress is a gradual process; be patient and put in the effort required to succeed.
